Herbert W. "Herb" Covington

Herbert W. "Herb" Covington, age 72, of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2017, at Tri Star Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Herb played football for the Hopkinsville High School Tigers from 1961 to 1963.  The first year he played fullback, but with the arrival of Fleming Thornton in 1962, he was moved to halfback where he started for the next two seasons.  In his junior year, he was selected to both the All-WKC and All-State teams.  In 1963, Herb's senior year, he played both offense and defense.  He was once again selected All-WKC and All-State, as well as All-American.  His high school number, 22, was retired by Hopkinsville High School in 1997.

Following high school, Herb attended Memphis State University on a football scholarship.  There, he enjoyed a great career as a leading rusher on the freshman team and as a three-year starter on the varsity team.  Two of the most notable moments of his college career were a 125-yard rushing performance in an upset of nationally fifth-ranked Mississippi State in 1965 and a 92-yard run against Cincinnati that was the longest run from scrimmage in Memphis State history, which is still a record.  Herb was drafted by the New Orleans Saints following college, but his pro career was cut short due to a knee injury.

He retired as Supervisor of Special Events from P&E Distributing, a wholesaler of Anheuser-Busch products, and most recently worked at the Christian County Road Department for the past three years.  Herb was an avid golfer who enjoyed life and especially loved his family and the many close friends who surrounded him.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sheila West Covington of Hopkinsville, a sister, Martha Covington of Hopkinsville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William T. and Ruby Lee Gibbs Covington, one brother, and one sister.

There will be a brief service held at Walnut Street Stadium, the old Tiger Field, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017, followed by a Celebration of Life service at the War Memorial Building (Teen Town), 1202 South Virginia Street in Hopkinsville.

Memorial contributions in Herb's name may be made to the Christian County Animal Shelter, 2935 Russellville Road, Hopkinsville, KY 42240, or to the Herb Covington Memorial Hopkinsville High School Tigers Football Scholarship fund, 430 Coffman Drive, Hopkinsville, KY 42240.

Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, Inc., 138 Main Street in Cadiz.

So sorry to hear of Herb's passing. I have not seen Herb in many years and always was a friend. We had many a good time in Old Hoptown. He will surely be missed and remembered for his athletic ability. But, most importantly I will remember him as a humble, good hearted man, always a big smile and loved to have fun..REST in PEACE, Herb, you deserve it.
