Carole K. Gardner Nikaido, age 73, of Deerfield, IL, formerly of Cadiz, KY, passed away Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at Whitehall Rehabilitation Center in Deerfield, IL. Carole was a graduate of Deaconese Nursing School in Evansville, Indiana. After graduation, she worked for the University of Kentucky Medical Center for several years before moving to Maui, HI in 1970. She worked there for 20 years as a mental health nurse and retired after working another 5 years as a school nurse. In 1970, Carole met and married Minoru “Nick” Nikaido . They lived on the Island of Maui until 2001 when they moved to Cadiz, KY where they resided until Nick’s death in 2012. Carole was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Cadiz Lions Club, NARFE & the VFW Auxiliary Post 1913. Carole was the life of the party to all those around her. She is survived by: Two Daughters & Son-In-Law- Noelle & Ivan Sim, Westlake, OH & Nicole Nikaido, San Mateo, CA, Two Grandchildren- Scout & Sailor Sim, One Sister & Brother-in-Law- Mary Elaine Gardner & Charles Whittle, Kamuela, HI. She was preceded in death by: Father - James Kessner Gardner, Mother - Ruth Ellen Gardner & Husband - Minoru "Nick" Nikaido.
Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, Inc., 138 Main St. -P.O. Box 2050 Cadiz, KY 42211-031 in Cadiz, KY. A Memorial Service will be at Bethel United Methodist Church at 12:30 PM Sunday, March 16, 2014 with the Reverend Kenny Rogers officiating. A joint committal service will be held Monday, March 17, 2014 at 11:00 AM for Minoru "Nick" & Carole K. Nikaido at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville, KY.
