Capt. (Ret.) A.L. Clinard, age 91, of Cadiz, KY, passed away Monday, September 15, 2014, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville, KY. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1939 at the age of 16 at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas He retired November 1, 1961 at Ft. Campbell, KY as the Post Signal Officer. He landed on Normandy Beach on “D” Day June 6, 1944. Participated in the Belgian Bulge and met the Russians at the Elbe River and at the conclusion of the war was in Pilzer, Czech. He was the first man to de post his unit to return home in May 1945. After he reenlisted he was sent to Okinawa and at the conclusion of WWII finished out his enlistment on the island of Guam. After the Korean outbreak then Master Sergeant was given a direct commission to 2nd Lt. in 1951. During his military service he was decorated with service medals including the Bronze Star with Valor and 2 campaign ribbons with 8 battle stars, Awarded the French and Belgium Fouragene for the Battle of the Bulge and the French Liberation medal for the Normandy Landing on “D” Day. Although he retired to the life of the outdoors, he found time help his wife with the chores of home life and lending his abilities to civic activities and organizations. Over the years he served as President of the Retired Officers Chapter of Ft. Campbell & was actively involved in the VFW Post 1913 in Hopkinsville, KY. He was active in the Masonic Lodge serving as Past Master of Cadiz Lodge 121, served as Director of Work in the Scottish Rite at West Ky Consistory. He was a 33rd degree Mason, the last and highest degree in Masonry. He is survived by: One Daughter - Rosa Clinard-Brashears, Cadiz, KY, Three Sons- Harry L. Clinard, Paducah, KY, Thomas David Clinard, Orange City, FL & Richard Joe Clinard, Des Moines, IA, Eleven Grandchildren, Nineteen Great Grandchildren & Three Great Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: Wife - Jane Clinard, Father - Louis Clinard, Mother - Rosa Mae Clinard & One Grand Daughter- Brittany Nicole Hunter. Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, Inc., 138 Main St. -P.O. Box 2050 Cadiz, KY 42211-031 in Cadiz, KY where the family will receive friends after 4:00 PM on Friday, September 19, 2014 with Masonic rites to be held at 6:00 PM. Funeral Service will be at Goodwin Funeral Home at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 20, 2014 with the Reverend John Hagan officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Little River Cemetery in Trigg Co., KY.
