Barbara Jean Clark Long, age 86, of Cadiz, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at her home. Mrs. Long was an author and poet, who discovered her love for writing at the age of six. She wrote editorials for several magazines and newspapers and also authored two books, "Roof Over My Soul", a book of poems and prose, and "Jeanie's Journey", a biography of her daughter, Jeanie, and the tragic automobile accident that eventually claimed her life at the age of 24. Barbara was once quoted as saying, "I consider my ability to write as a gift from God, but a lot depends on what I choose to do with it...I sometimes think I could probably last longer without food or water than my pen and paper." Barbara was also a member of Hurricane Baptist Church in Trigg County and was a former Sunday School teacher.
She is survived by one son, Nathan Scott Long of Cadiz; one daughter, Carrie Lynn Gray (Jimmy) of Cadiz; two stepsons, Mark Long (Sequoia) of Palm Beach, Florida, and Kelly Long of Cadiz; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Long of Lamasco, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Brandi Phillips (Jesse), Miranda Brown (Josh), Tara Hill, Jacob Long (Dayla), Clint Long (Misty), Chandler Long, and James W. Gray; and seven great grandchildren, Kaylee Brown, Trent Brown, Austin Long, Connor Long, Chaxton Long, Trevor Long, and Kody Phillips.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Dorine Cooper Clark; her first husband, John Murl Johnston; her second husband, William "Bill" Long; one daughter, Jeanie Johnston; one stepson, Ronnie Long; one stepdaughter, Christy Hill; and one brother and sister-in-law, Marshall and Lois Clark.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Hurricane Baptist Church, 4153 Hurricane Road in Cadiz, with a Celebration of Life Service to begin at 11:00 AM at the church, with the Reverend Bob McIntosh officiating.
